Samsung Galaxy Note

The Samsung Galaxy Note is an Android smartphone and tablet computer that was introduced in October 2011. It has attracted attention because of its size, between that of conventional smartphones and tablets, and because of its inbuilt stylus.
The Galaxy Note was announced by Samsung during IFA 2011 in Berlin. It was released to the public starting with Germany in late October 2011, with other countries following shortly after that. By the end of November, it was available in most major markets, including East Asia, Europe and India.
In December 2011, Samsung announced that 1 million Galaxy Notes were shipped in less than two months, and that Galaxy Notes will be available in the US in 2012.
The Galaxy Note, with a 135 mm (5.3 in) screen, occupies a niche in Samsung's Galaxy range, bridging the gap between their smartphones such as the Galaxy S II, and the Galaxy Tab tablet. Reviews regarding its size have been mixed. Some have said that it's too big to be a true mobile phone, citing the difficulty of using it single-handed , storing it in a small pocket, and the perceived ungainly appearance against the face ; while others have hailed it as a pioneer in a new market segment (despite the lack of success of the similarly-sized but stylus-lacking Dell Streak), combining the best features of both device types. Its potential as a games console has also been pointed out.
Hardware specifications of the device include:
a dual-core 1.4Ghz processor, But Sk telecom, KT, LG U+ use 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S3 Chipset
a 5.3” WXGA (1280 x 800) HD Super AMOLED screen
an 8-megapixel main camera that can record 1080p video, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera
802.11 b/g/n support for Wi-Fi
HSPA+ 21Mbps 850/900/1900/2100 mobile network support.
positioning using both the a-GPS and GLONASS systems.

Stylus

An unusual feature for such a device is a built-in stylus, which Samsung calls the "S Pen".The stylus tucks into the bottom panel of the phone, and can be used in a variety of apps. It can simply replace the use of a finger in situations where precision is needed, but it is also equipped with a "shift" button, which when pressed enables other functions such as grabbing screenshots (which can then be drawn on using the stylus) or starting the S-Note note-taking application, which is a facility for recording sticky-note-type notes which can include drawing/handwriting (using the stylus), text input, and pictures. The stylus is partnered by a Wacom digitiser system, which results in accurate pressure-sensitive input.
Samsung released in late November 2011 an SDK (software development kit) for the stylus so developers can write third-party apps that use it for input. Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich", which is expected to be made available for the Galaxy Note in 2012, also includes support for stylus input.
The practice of using a stylus with a handheld computer was popular during the era of Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) devices in the 1990s, whose screens lacked the sensitivity of modern touchscreens and so used the stylus as a primary input method. With the advent of touch-controlled smartphones, styluses became unfashionable; Steve Jobs of Apple, which pioneered tablet and smartphone design, famously remarked "if you see a stylus ... they blew it". Reviewers have therefore expressed interest in the rebirth of stylus input. The Galaxy Note implementation has been described as high quality , superior to other recent efforts such as on the HTC Flyer tablet.

Sony Xperia X8

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 is a mid-range 3G Android smart phone developed by Sony Ericsson in the Xperia series in released in Q4 2010. It is sold in many countries worldwide, including the United States on AT&T Mobility and low-end pay-monthly contracts in the UK. It originally shipped running Android 1.6 but was upgraded in early 2011 to Android 2.1.

The phone has a 3.0-inch (76 mm) capacitive touch screen LCD. It has a resolution of 320 by 480 pixels (HVGA) with 24-bit depth. At the back is a 3.2 megapixel camera with fixed focus. The photos can be geotagged. The camera can be accessed either through the touchscreen menu or by the camera button on the side of the phone. The Xperia X8 uses a Qualcomm MSM7227 600 MHz processor, has a 3-axis accelerometer and built-in GPS, a digital compass, an ambient light sensor and a lug for attaching a strap.
Multi-touch support was also added to several aftermarket firmware versions (ROMS) which enabled users to use basic multitouch gestures such as pinch to zoom, something that Sony Ericsson was adamant was impossible on the X8.
Sony Ericsson has made its own custom overlay on top of the Android system using an optimized version of the UX (user experience) interface, which consists of design elements, themes and custom applications. The four corners of the screen have replaceable shortcuts for commonly used applications. The main application is Sony Ericsson Timescape, a social networking application that combines messages from Facebook, Twitter, SMS and email into a flowing column on the home screen. Photos may be attached to contacts or sent to a Facebook account. The phone contains expected smartphone applications as well as: Wisepilot Navigation Software, Google Maps, YouTube, Sony's PlayNow Arena and TrackID (to identify a song by recording a small part of it).
Sony Ericsson was widely criticized by X8 users for failing to provide Android firmware upgrades to 2.2(Froyo) or 2.3(Gingerbread), who later stated that the phone's hardware was incapable of running anything beyond 2.1(Eclair). Surprisingly, they were proven wrong by the Android modding community, who released their own versions of Android 2.2 and 2.3 in subsequent months which ran quite stably on the X8.

Samsung Nexus Vision

Rawad Semaan sent me his design, the Samsung Nexus Vision, a concept phone based on the quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and also packing a 12 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and a Super AMOLED display that’s probably 4.5 inches in diagonal and maybe supports 720p HD resolution. I’m speculating on these specs since the designer didn’t reveal too many details.
Samsung Nexus Vision, a Tegra 3 Phone With Nokia N9 Like Design

When I see the Samsung Nexus Vision I instantly think about a combination between the Nokia N9 and the Samsung Galaxy S II for some reason. Get this baby Android Ice Cream Sandwich, some 1080p 60 fps video capture, LTE connectivity, 32GB of internal memory, 2GB of RAM and we’re all set. Of course, I’ve heard people saying that Nvidia Tegra 3 is not the brightest choice when it comes to quad core processors, but I don’t have faith in Intel Medfield or whatever they plan on bringing to the smartphone market.
I think that TI OMAP is the kind of CPU you want to get on a smartphone nowadays or even the Exynos quad core unit that everyone is dreaming about. What about you? All of you phone designers and aficionados, which CPU do you like the most for 2012′s phones?

Samsung Flip Foldable Phone Features a Wrap Around Screen

Imagined a Samsung phone that’s based on new OLED screen technologies and the result was the Samsung Flip concept, seen below. This one is a device that’s able to fold and bend and it comes with a wrap around screen, plus a very interesting interface, that looks more modern than any TouchWiz version so far.
Samsung Flip Foldable Phone Features a Wrap Around Screen
The screen is wrapped around the bottom of the phone, where the notification area is placed, in order to get rid of clutter and keep the notification bar off the main screen. The Samsung Flip becomes an entirely different device when you flip it, depending on what your use for it is. Also, the UI changes depending on the phone positions, so for example there’s a special layout for videocalling, one for listening to music, playing back video or simply using the handset as a watch and photo frame.
You can also personalize the cover of the Samsung concept phone when it’s bended and as you can see this folding aspect allows you to keep the device attached to your belt or to a strap, as shown by the young ladies below. You can also keep recording video even if the phone is folded and it will actually keep it more steady for excellent video capture. Add a dual core 2GHz CPU to this device, Android 4.0, 16GB of memory and an 8MP camera like the one on the Galaxy Note and I’m sold!
